Runescape Woodcutting Guide Guide For F2P

Woodcutting can be considered  the most commonly trained skill in F2P. Here’s a guide to tell you how to make your level up fast and make some money along the way.

Requirements:

1. Iron hatchet (costs about 16 gp on GE, or you can buy from Bob’s Brilliant Axes in Lumbridge)

2. Patience and dedication (There’s a lot of xp from 1-99 (13 million!), so you need to be willing to put in many hours to achieve the dream of 99 Woodcutting)

3. Explorer’s Ring 3: You don’t need this, but having it will result in faster trips, which means more money and XP.

Now to the guide. There will be 2 sections: The first will be a way to train your woodcutting fast, but you’ll give up some of the profit in the process. The second will be a way to make a lot of money on the path to 99, but will be very slow XP-wise.

Fast XP:

Levels 1-15: With the iron hatchet you bought, head over to Varrock and go to the Grand Exchange. Just south of the entrance, you’ll find many regular trees. Chop these until you have a full inventory, then go up to the GE and either sell them right away, or bank them and sell them later. At level 6, go to the GE and buy a Steel Hatchet (sell the logs you had if you need money to buy it). At level 11, you can  buy a Black Hatchet, but since you’ll be using it for such a short time, and it’s expensive (around 1k), you can continue to use your Steel Hatchet until level 21. Continue chopping normal trees until level 15. Normal trees give 25 XP each, so you’ll need to chop 97 Logs until level 15.

Approximate money made from this section: 5k

Levels 15-31: Head south from where you’ve been currently woodcutting to the Varrock West Bank. Head slightly west, and you’ll see some Oak Trees. Luckily, unlike the normal trees you just chopped, oak trees (and every other tree) give multiple logs, allowing you to look at another tab while Woodcutting. You can bank these at the West bank, or make a slightly longer trip up to the GE and sell your logs there. At level 21, head up to the GE and buy a Mithril Hatchet. Continue cutting oak trees until level 31. Oak trees give 37.5 XP per log, so you’ll need to chop 332 Oak Logs until 31.

Approximate money made from this section: 25k

Levels 31-99: At level 31, head to the GE and buy an Adamant Hatchet (and a Rune Hatchet if you have the money, to save a long trip to the GE). If you’re an experienced F2P Woodcutter, you may be thinking, “Go to Draynor and chop the willows there.” Wrong! Although it is a great place to cut willows with a bank close by, that location is often very crowded, which results in willow trees going down in about 5 seconds, and very slow XP. You’ll actually be heading to Port Sarim, a short distance from Draynor Village. Just west of the wall that separates Draynor Village from Port Sarim are 4 willow trees. Get used to it, because this will be your home until 99 Woodcutting. Once you get a full inventory, head south onto the docks, and head towards the monks you see. You will find a not-very-well-known deposit box to bank your logs. This deposit box was originally made for P2P members who wanted to go to Entrana, but forgot to take their weapons and armour off. Now, it will be used by you for fast banking of your willows. After depositing, head back to the trees and continue…At level 41, you can head to the Draynor Village bank (if you bought a Rune Hatchet earlier), or to the GE (if you didn’t) and get a Rune Hatchet. Head back to the willows and keep chopping until 99. Willow trees give 67.5 XP per log, so you’ll need to chop 192,883 willow logs for level 99.

Approximate money made from this section: 1.5 million

You’ve only made approximately 1.6m from 99 Woodcutting, but you got it in the fastest possible way on a free-to-play server. Congratulations! Now, you can chop Yew Trees at maximum speed. Read my guide for chopping yews below.

Fast making money:

Levels 1-15: Same as in the first guide: chop the regular trees with your Iron (Steel at level 6 and on) Hatchet and either bank or sell them directly. Continue until 15.

Approximate money made from this section: 5k

Levels 15-60 (70): Chop oak trees at either the location I stated earlier in the guide (south of Varrock West Bank), or you can head to Draynor Village and chop the Oak Trees east of the bank. Alternative location: Draynor Village (3 oak trees close to the bank, with one a few steps east of it) You may be wondering: why aren’t I doing willows from 30-60? Because oak logs (as of April 11th, 2010) are 81 each, compared to a measly 8 each for willows! Remember to switch to a Mithril Hatchet at level 21, an Adamant Hatchet at level 31, and a Rune Hatchet at level 41. From level 15, you’ll need to chop 7,236 oak logs until level 60.

Approxmate money made from this section: 580k

Levels 60-99: Time for the most sought after tree in F2P: Yews! There are only a few Yew Trees in F2P, so a lot of the time, you’ll be fighting amongst several people to get your yew logs. There is one spot, however, that is unknown to many F2P players, and as a result, has one of the quietest groves of Yew Trees: Rimmington. If you don’t know where this is, it’s located southwest of Falador, near the Crafting Guild. Those of you who have done Dragon Slayer may remember visiting Melzar’s Maze here. In fact, just slightly south of Melzar’s Maze are 4 yew trees. These will be the source of your income until 99 Woodcutting. The reason I put 70 in parentheses in the above section is that Yew trees cut very slowly at level 60, even with a Rune Hatchet. For that reason, I recommend you stay at Oaks or Willows until level 70, to have the yew logs come in slightly faster. To bank your logs, either run east (if you don’t have an explorer’s ring 3), or cabbage-port with your ring and run south to the deposit box near the monks. Bank your logs here and rest, because you’ll probably be pretty close to 0% run. Rest at the deposit box until about 70% energy (you’ll need about this much to run the whole way), then run west to the Yew Trees and continue chopping until 99. Yew Trees give 175 XP per log, so you’ll need to chop 72,919 yew logs for level 99, if you started them at level 60.

Approximate money made from this section: 36 million!

Although it may have taken quite a few months, you have made almost 37 million coins off of 99 Woodcutting in F2P! Go treat yourself to some nice god armour or some other fancy clothes, because you earned it! With 99, you now have a steady income stream with yew logs, to further you on your Runescape adventure. Congratulations on 99!

Tips and Tricks:

  • This is as boring as watching my avatar chop trees!: After level 15, every tree you chop will give multiple logs. This allows you to look at another tab while your character is chopping. I highly recommend this, because watching your character chop is booooring. Try browsing the RuneScape forums, watch YouTube videos, or go on Twitter or Facebook to pass the time. I recommend leaving the RuneScape sound on, though, because then you can hear when the tree you chopped fell down so you can start cutting another.
  • Variety is the spice of life: I cannot stress this enough: doing the same thing over and over again is boring! I strongly recommend you switch woodcutting locations for variety. Although the locations I’ve listed are probably the best, staying at them for the ridiculous amount of time you’ll need to in order to achieve level 99 isn’t the best idea. Even though you’re potentially giving up XP you’d get at the other location, you’re bound to stay more dedicated to your goal and chop longer. This results in getting more XP, and therefore, level 99 faster.
  • Need Yew: As I said in the last tip, going to alternate locations is important. Here are the locations for all the yew trees in F2P:

1. 1 Yew Tree at the graveyard in Lumbridge

2. 1 Yew Tree north of Port Sarim, and the willow trees I talked about

3. 1 Yew Tree near the church in Varrock

4. 1 Yew Tree east of the Champions’ Guild

5. 1 Yew Tree near the Earth Runecrafting altar (northeast of Varrock)

6. 2 Yew Trees slightly south of the Edgeville bank

7. 3 Yew Trees in the forest south of Falador (use cabbage-port on explorer’s ring 3 to cut these and the one near Port Sarim quickly)

8. 3 Yew Trees east of the GE, above the Castle

9. 3 Yew Trees slightly northeast of Varrock

10. 4 Yew Trees west of Lumbridge

11. 4 Yew Trees in Rimmington near Melzar’s Maze (more in-depth above)

Thanks for your reading, hope you can following this guide and chop trees at proper place with proper hatchet, that you can chop most of the trees and gain the most profit for your character!
